THE COLOR CO/OP · COLOR THEORY FOR QUILTERS

The End of "Do These Even Go Together?"

The COLOR CO/OP is a color club for quilters. Each month you learn one color lesson and sew it into a block, so you can stop copying the pattern's colors and pick your own. Plain language. Baby steps. No vocab quizzes.

100 founding seats at $9 a month, yours for as long as you stay. Doors open Black Friday, Nov. 27. The waitlist hears first.

Color wheel bars in a rainbow of fabric colors

PICTURE IT

What if the fabric pull was your favorite part?

Picture the quilter you're about to become.

  • You pull five fabrics from five different collections, and they sing together. You know why they work, so you trust them.
  • The quilt shop stops feeling overwhelming. You walk straight to what your quilt needs.
  • You look at a pattern's colors and think, "I'd do that in teal." Then you do it, and it works.
  • The question in your head changes from "do these even go together?" to "which one do I love most?"

That quilter didn't get a gift you missed out on. She's you, a handful of color lessons from now.

HERE'S THE THING

It was never about the fabric

Tell me if any of these sound familiar.

  • You've made a few quilts, and every one used the pattern's exact colors. Sometimes the exact fabrics.
  • You bought a bundle in your favorite colors. You loved every fabric. The quilt came out flat, and you couldn't say why.
  • A pattern said "choose fabrics with good contrast." You nodded like you knew what that meant. That pattern is still in the drawer.

Somewhere along the way, you decided other quilters got a color gene you didn't.

HERE'S THE TRUTH

Color is a Skill, Not a Talent

Nobody handed me a color gene either.

Years ago, I threw a finished quilt top in the trash because of my color choices. That was $180 of fabric.

One of my favorite color lessons came from an appliqué class. The pattern cover was bright and cheerful. I made mine entirely in grays, on purpose. The first class was only stems, so my classmates saw a pile of gray stems and gave me the side eye.

That gray quilt taught me more about value than any color wheel. Value is how light or dark a fabric is. With the color gone, light next to dark was all I had to work with, and it was enough.

What changed wasn't talent. I learned how color works, one idea at a time. Light next to dark. Warm next to cool. Why one red takes over a whole quilt. Once I understood the why, I stopped guessing.

That's what I'll teach you. Color theory for quilters, in plain language, one lesson a month.

HOW IT WORKS

One Color. One Lesson. One Block. Every Month.

Learn

On the first Thursday of the month, I teach one color lesson live, at 7 p.m. ET. Bring your questions. Can't make it? The replay is up within 24 hours.

Sew

You get a block pattern that puts the lesson into fabric. Think of it as homework you get to sew. You use fabric from your own stash, so nothing ships to your door.

Finish

Four blocks make a 24" x 24" wall quilt. Keep going, and the Layout Library takes you all the way up to king size.

What You Get Every Month

  • A live color lesson. The first Thursday of every month at 7 p.m. ET, with time for your questions.
  • The replay. Up within 24 hours, so you never miss a lesson.
  • A one-page lesson summary. Print it and hang it by your sewing machine.
  • A block pattern. An original block that puts the lesson into fabric. Professionally edited, with a graphic for every step. Blocks finish at 12", and some layouts include 6" and 3" sizes.
  • The Layout Library. Quilt layouts from a 24" x 24" wall quilt up to king, so you can finish a quilt whenever you have the blocks.
  • The Start Here module. Your first steps as a member, ready the moment you join.
  • A members-only coupon code. Savings on anything in the For the Love of Thread shop.
  • The member community. A place to share your blocks and fabric pulls and ask questions between lessons.

Plus One Rotating Bonus Each Month

  • Fabric pull critiques. Send me a photo of a fabric pull. I record one video with feedback on everyone's, so you learn from every critique.
  • How Do I Quilt It. When your top is close, a bonus video on making a quilting plan.
  • Color challenges. A themed prompt, like "teal is your base color." Draw it with markers or pull it from your stash.
  • Done-for-you color palettes. Not often, since you're learning to build your own. But sometimes it's nice to be handed something lovely.

JOIN ANYTIME

There is No "Behind" Here

Join in March, and you start with March's lesson. Every lesson and block before that waits in the member library for as long as you're a member. Nothing expires.

You don't need 12 blocks to make a quilt. Four blocks make a wall quilt. Have six? There's a layout for that. "I'm three blocks from a wall quilt" sounds a lot better than "I'm behind."

START HERE

You Don't Wait for January to Begin

The minute you join, the Start Here module opens. It's six short steps:

  1. A welcome from me. Who I am and what to expect.
  2. A tour. Where everything lives and a chance to say hi in the community.
  3. Color words, in plain language. Hue, value, and the rest, with a printable cheat sheet.
  4. Your first win. Pull 10 fabrics from your stash, snap a black-and-white photo, and sort them from lightest to darkest. It takes 10 minutes, and it'll change how you see your stash.
  5. The calendar. What's coming January through March.
  6. The founders' page. Your founding rate in writing, and how to tell me what you want to learn.

Founding members who join by Dec. 9 are also invited to the founders' welcome, a casual live hangout on Thursday, Dec. 10. Then our first lesson, blue and value, is Thursday, Jan. 7. All sessions are at 7 p.m. ET.

100 FOUNDING SEATS

100 Founding Seats Open Black Friday

The first 100 members get the founding rate, locked in for as long as they stay. In return, I'll ask you for feedback, ideas, and requests along the way. You're helping me build this, and I want to hear from you.

Nothing to pay until Jan. 1. At checkout, you'll see $0 due today. Your first payment is on Jan. 1, the week before our first lesson.

When the 100 founding seats are gone, the price goes to $12 a month or $120 a year.

I threw away $180 of fabric over bad color choices. At the regular price, that's 15 months of The COLOR CO/OP.

Every lesson ends in a block, and every block gets you closer to a finished quilt. You aren't paying for one more thing to sit on the shelf. You're paying for a skill you keep.

TRY IT

Try the First Lesson On Me

Join when the doors open, and you pay nothing until Jan. 1. Cancel before then, and you're never charged. After that, come to the first lesson on Jan. 7. If The COLOR CO/OP isn't right for you, tell me by Jan. 21, and I'll refund your payment. Join on Jan. 1 or later? You get 14 days from the day you join.

After that, you can still cancel anytime. You keep access through the end of the month you've paid for.

Paying for the year? If you need to cancel later, I'll refund the months you haven't used, figured at the monthly rate.

Joni Gaines at her sewing machine

Meet Joni

Hi, I'm Joni Gaines, a quilt pattern designer and teacher.

I started quilting with a cardboard cutting mat and the ugliest calico you've ever seen. More than 25 years later, I still remember how it felt to have no idea what came next. That's why I teach in plain language and baby steps.

You might know me from free motion quilting. Color matters there too. Do you match your thread or go for contrast? How do you keep yellow thread on a blue background from turning muddy? Every quilt pattern I write comes with a coloring sheet, because I've always wanted you to try your own colors.

I teach the why behind every step. Once you know why colors work together, you can make your own choices, even when I'm not around.

What my students say

"Joni is an excellent teacher and was so willing to make sure we all 'got it.'"

Terry P., free motion quilting student

"Joni is a supportive, encouraging problem solver and a very knowledgeable teacher."

Marilyn W., free motion quilting student

"This was the best investment that I could give to myself! ... Joni teaches you all her tricks and hints for success."

Glenda A., free motion quilting student

Is This for You?

This is for You if:

  • You've made a few quilts, and you still pick the pattern's colors every time.
  • You love fabric, but your fabric pulls come out flat or muddy.
  • You want to learn by doing, with fabric in your hands, not by memorizing a color wheel.
  • You'd like a teacher and a group of quilters to learn alongside.

This Isn't for You if:

  • You want a fabric kit mailed to you each month. Nothing ships. You sew from your own stash.
  • You're looking for an art school course on color theory. This is color for quilters, in plain language.
  • You'd rather someone pick every color for you, forever. I'll hand you a palette now and then, but my goal is for you to choose your own.

Questions

Is this a block of the month?

Sort of. You get a new block pattern every month, but it comes with a color lesson, and nothing ships. You use fabric from your own stash. The block is where you practice the lesson.

Color theory sounds like art school. Will it go over my head?

I promise there are no vocab quizzes. You might forget the word value. You won't forget what happens when light and dark sit side by side. This club isn't about definitions. It's about practice.

What if I fall behind?

You can't. Every lesson and block stays in the member library for as long as you're a member. Nothing expires. Start with this month, and catch up when you want to.

When are the live lessons?

The first Thursday of every month at 7 p.m. ET. The first one is Thursday, Jan. 7. The replay is up within 24 hours if you can't make it.

Do I need to be an experienced quilter?

If you can sew a quarter-inch seam and you've made a quilt or two, you're ready. Every block pattern walks you through each step with a graphic.

How much fabric will I need?

Each block pattern lists what you need. Most months, your stash will have plenty. Part of the fun is learning to use what you already have. Once you're ready to put your blocks into a quilt top, check out the options in the Layout Library. There you'll find fabric requirements for any sashing, setting squares, borders, backing, and binding.

I know Joni from free motion quilting. Why learn color from her?

Color matters in free motion quilting too, from thread choices to which areas get the spotlight. I know quilting, and I know how to teach. Every pattern I write has a coloring sheet, because I've always wanted you to try your own colors.

When do I pay?

Not until Jan. 1. At checkout, you enter your card and see $0 due today. Your first payment is Jan. 1, the week before our first live lesson. In the meantime, the Start Here module and the community are open to you.

What does "founding member" mean?

The first 100 members get $9 a month or $90 a year, locked in for as long as they stay. In return, I'll ask for your feedback, ideas, and requests. When the 100 seats are gone, the price goes to $12 a month or $120 a year.

Can I cancel?

Yes, anytime. You keep access through the end of the month you've paid for. If you cancel, your rate goes with it. If you come back later, you'll join at the price that's current then.

What if I join for the year and need to cancel?

That's okay. Life happens. I'll refund the months you haven't used. I start with what you paid for the year, then subtract each month you've used at the monthly rate. The month you're in counts as used. Say you're a founding member and you paid $90. You cancel after three months. Three months at $9 is $27, so you get $63 back. After 10 months, there's nothing left to refund, and you keep access until your year is up.

Is there a guarantee?

Yes.

Where does everything live?

In Kajabi, my member site. The lessons, the replays, the block patterns, and the community are all in one place.
